Untangling Noises of Matter
Untangling Noises of Matter
Documentary Film, Instrument Design
The extraction and re-location of metals calibrate new electromagnetic coordinates. Magnetic data stored away in deep time is disrupted by excavation, leading to shifting phenomena in electromagnetism. This exposure amplifies geographies that are invisible to the practiced senses. Through a self-built tool Louis Braddock Clarke has found a way to make these invisible fields audible.
The film shows the live territory of iron ore moving beyond its physical particles into a cacophony of noise and information. This guides the viewer into the perceptual spectrum of birds, who possess sensitivities to tune in to these ecological frequencies, thus shifting their navigations. As a film in documenting the planet’s global movement of metal, collaborations took place within private metal companies in the Maasvlakte (Europort Rotterdam), Science Institutes, Conservatoriums and Mineral Museums.
