3-channel film installation
During the research of ‘Hard Drives from Space’ a period of 6 months was spent in the Haviggivik community in Inugguit Nunaat (Northern Greenland). During this time sonic sampling of geomagnetic shifts in Northern Greenland were recorded to navigate the intersections of climate change, mineral extraction, indigenous cosmology, and post-colonialism. With the local community the locating of meteorite craters became a series of performances on geological restitutions.
In the 3 channel film and sound installation we see hunters and shamans Olennguaq, Qaqquk, and Aleqatsiaq performing a series of remagnetising rituals in meteorite craters. Using a simple blowtoch and heating up stolen meteorites the minerals magnetic data is destroyed and recalibrated to the current Earths magnetic field. A form of re-time stamping a geological body to restitute it back to the place of belonging.
The core narrative takes place at Imnaminomen (Cape York), where 10,000 years ago meteorite fragments collided with the ice cap. This geological spectacle set in motion a technological leap in the lives of the Inughuit, who sculpted fragments of the ‘heaven stones’ into ulos, knives, and harpoon heads. Today, another anomaly irritates the surface: climate change melts the freeze, unhinging metallic masses from their bedrocks.
