As Gems in Metal - Face 001
16:9 Stone cinema sculpture
FACE 001 explores geological and acoustic phenomena, transforming infrasound into an immersive sensory experience. Infrasound, with its inaudible frequencies (0–20 Hz), captures shockwaves from human activities such as gas flares, mining blasts, atomic detonations, airstrikes, and wildfires. These infrasonic signals, often reserved for scientific or military purposes, are made accessible through self-built barometric microphones, shifting their exclusive use into the public and artistic domain. Here, a 3-meter-wide stone slice, cut to a cinematic 16:9 ratio, acts as narrator. The stone screen functions as both screen and speaker, sender and receiver, creating “infrasonic images” that immerse the audience in a macro-geological environment. 24 bone- conducting transducers, along with subwoofers placed throughout the space, convert electrical signals into physical vibrations, transforming the installation into a landscape of geological listening. The resulting film score, composed of seismic reflections, Shepard tones, and tectonic pulses, creates a macro-geology of Deep Time resonance.
